Deuteron UV RM15 is a special matting agent designed for use in 100% UV curable systems. It's a compound of wax in acrylic monomers, specifically formulated to provide matting effects in UV-cured coatings. The unique combination of raw materials and production process enables the matting of difficult-to-matt UV curing systems.
The matting effect of Deuteron UV RM15 is achieved through controlled incompatibility on the surface during the curing process. This disrupts leveling during curing, resulting in microscopic surface structures that contribute to matting. Compared to conventional particle-based matting agents, Deuteron UV RM products offer a wider formulation latitude, less impact on viscosity, and improved film properties.
Applications for Deuteron UV RM15 include all 100% UV curable systems, regardless of the applied film thickness. However, it's important to note that these products do not work in aqueous or solvent-based formulations or in the presence of other surface-active substances such as silicone leveling additives, wetting agents, or dispersing additives.
The matting performance of Deuteron UV RM15 improves under certain conditions, such as lower viscosity, lower functionality of monomers and oligomers, lower reactivity, higher dose/intensity of UV radiation during curing, and lower belt speed. The use of Deuteron UV RM15 particularly enhances matting without requiring large quantities of active substance, with very low impact on viscosity, water repellence, smooth/slip surface properties, mechanical properties, and without adverse effects on flexibility.
The recommended dosage of Deuteron UV RM15 is between 5% to 15% of the complete formulation, depending on the binder, application, and required properties. It's essential to conduct trials to determine the optimum dosage as it can vary significantly based on the resin, monomers, and initiators used. Typically, 10% is a good starting point in various formulations, but high addition levels can reduce reactivity.
Deuteron UV RM15 appears as a white dispersion with a density of approximately 0.95 g/cm³ and a viscosity of around 7000 mPa*s. It has an active content of approximately 20% and contains reactive thinner DPGDA/LA. The particle size distribution is around 4 µm for dv50 and 11 µm for dv90.
Regarding processing, it's recommended to conduct laboratory trials with additive-free lacquers, incorporating the product without shear forces and avoiding grinding processes.
Deuteron UV RM15 has a shelf life of 12 months under room temperature and dry conditions. It should be stored in its original tightly closed containers, and phase separation should be addressed by stirring before use.
