Desmodur® HL BA is an aromatic/aliphatic polyisocyanate based on toluylene diisocyanate (TDI) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). It is typically used in combination with various Desmophen® grades or other suitable substances containing hydroxyl groups to formulate two-component polyurethane coatings. These coatings are known for their rapid drying and good lightfastness.
Some key specifications of Desmodur® HL BA include:
It is supplied at approximately 60% concentration in butyl acetate. Desmodur® HL BA is compatible with solvents such as ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, and 1-methoxypropylacetate-2 for thinning, but solutions formed should be tested for storage stability.
This product is commonly used in wood coatings due to its rapid initial drying and early sandability, allowing for the formulation of high-bodied clear or pigmented finishes with just a few coats.
Similar to Desmodur® H, Desmodur® HL BA should be stored in its original sealed container at temperatures between 0 to 30°C, protected from moisture, heat, and foreign materials. It's sensitive to moisture, and storage at high temperatures can lead to an increase in viscosity and a reduction of the NCO content.
Like other polyisocyanates, Desmodur® HL BA is mainly used as a hardener in coating materials or adhesives and is suitable for industrial or trade applications, not DIY applications. It's not designated for medical grade, food contact, or cosmetic applications unless explicitly approved by Covestro.
As with any chemical product, users should conduct their own testing to ensure suitability for their intended applications, considering technical, health, safety, and environmental factors.
