CYMEL® 1161 Resin

CYMEL® 1161 is a resin used as a crosslinker in coatings. It is highly monomeric and methylated/iso-butylated melamine crosslinker with a high degree of alkylation. It's known for allowing the formulation of high solids coatings with excellent appearance, recoat adhesion, and flexibility. It finds applications in various areas such as automotive coatings, coil coatings, and high solids primer formulations.

• Solubility: It is soluble in alcohols, esters, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, and partially soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons. However, it is insoluble in water.
• Compatibility: It shows very good compatibility with acrylic resins, alkyd resins, polyester resins, and epoxy resins.
• Backbone Polymer Selection: CYMEL® 1161 is effective as a crosslinker for backbone polymer resins containing hydroxyl, carboxyl, or amide functional groups, such as alkyd, polyester, or acrylic resins.
• Catalysis: It responds best to sulfonic acid catalysts like CYCAT® 4040 catalyst or CYCAT® 600 catalyst. The recommended concentration of catalyst is generally 0.5 to 1.0% on total resin solids of the formulation.
• Formulation Stability: Stability of formulated systems containing CYMEL® 1161 can be enhanced by the addition of primary alcohols, amines, or a combination of these. Low molecular weight primary alcohols and recommended amines can be effective.
• Storage Stability: It has a shelf life of 1800 days when stored at temperatures below 32°C. Excessive local heat should be avoided to prevent irreversible increase in viscosity.
