Bayhydrol® A 2470 is an aqueous hydroxyfunctional polyacrylic dispersion used primarily in the formulation of waterborne two-component (2K) polyurethane varnishes. These varnishes are often combined with aliphatic polyisocyanates, such as Desmodur® or Bayhydur®, to create high-gloss top coats that can be applied to various substrates. Here are the key points from the datasheet:
Composition and Properties
- Form: Approximately 45% in water/solvent naphtha® 100/Dowanol® PnB, neutralized with dimethylethanolamine/triethanolamine.
- Viscosity: 1,500 - 3,000 mPa·s at 23°C.
- Non-volatile Content: 44 - 47%.
- pH: 7 - 8.
- Hydroxyl Content: Approximately 3.9%.
- Acid Value: Approximately 10 mg KOH/g.
- Density: Approximately 1.06 g/ml at 20°C.
Characteristics and Application
- Thinnability: Can be thinned with water in any ratio.
- Compatibility: Suitable with various polyisocyanates like Desmodur® N 3400, N 3600, N 3900, Bayhydur® 3100, 304, 305, 401-70, VP LS 2150 BA, XP 2487/1, or XP 2655.
- Performance: When combined with polyisocyanates, yields hard, flexible, solvent-resistant, and weather-resistant high-gloss top coats. Can be dried at room temperature or force-dried.
- Discoloration: Application directly on wood may lead to discoloration.
- Pot Life: Approximately 4 hours when formulated with Bayhydur® 304 in an NCO/OH ratio of 1.5:1.
- Pigment Wetting: Good properties and high shear stability. Bead mills are suitable for grinding. Compatibility testing recommended for pigments and extenders.
- Additives: Borchigen® PW 25 for formulations, Byk® 380 for leveling and substrate wetting, Byk® 011 for antifoaming.
Storage and Handling
- Storage Conditions: Original sealed containers, 0 - 30°C, protect from frost, heat, and foreign material.
- Stability: Short-term cooling down to -18°C usually doesn't damage the product, but prolonged freezing or high temperatures can cause irreversible damage.
- Viscosity Adjustment: Can be adjusted with a 10% aqueous solution of dimethyl ethanol amine if decreased due to storage.
- Shelf Life: Guaranteed specifications for six months from the shipment date if stored properly.
