BYK-1610 is a VOC-free silicone-containing defoamer designed for use in aqueous coatings and adhesives. It is formulated with a combination of hydrophobic solids, emulsifiers, and foam-destroying polysiloxanes. This defoamer is particularly suitable for emulsion systems with a PVC (pigment volume concentration) range of 35-70 and serves as a cost-effective alternative to mineral oil defoamers.
Key Properties and Features:
- Composition: Emulsion of hydrophobic solids, emulsifiers, and foam-destroying polysiloxanes.
- Density: 1.01 g/ml at 20°C.
- Non-volatile matter: 17% (after 10 minutes at 150°C).
- Carrier: Water.
- Special Features: Replaces mineral oil defoamers in various applications such as emulsion paints, plasters, gloss paints, and semi-gloss paints. It is VOC-free (< 1500 ppm) and does not contain alkylphenol ethoxylates.
Recommended Use:
- Coatings Industry: Typically used in emulsion paints and plasters, as well as gloss and semi-gloss paints. Recommended for systems with a PVC range of 35-70.
- Adhesives: Effective in all aqueous emulsion adhesives as a defoaming agent.
Recommended Levels:
- Coatings: 0.1-0.5% additive (as supplied) based on total formulation, with exceptions up to 0.8%.
- Adhesives: 0.05-0.5% additive (as supplied) based on total formulation.
Incorporation and Processing Instructions:
- For coatings: Typically, 2/3 of the defoamer is added to the mill base, while 1/3 is added to the let-down or the finished paint. Incorporation can occur at any time during production.
- For adhesives: The additive can be added at any time during the production process at low to moderate shear forces.
Overall, BYK-1610 offers efficient defoaming properties, compatibility with various systems, and ease of incorporation, making it suitable for a wide range of applications in the coatings and adhesives industries.
