WATERBORNE GREY PRIMER based on NEOCRYL XK801 WITH ASCONIUM-143

This formulation provides instructions for creating a waterborne grey primer, NEOCRYL XK801 WITH ASCONIUM-143, suitable for coating sand blasted steel. It emphasizes the need for thorough dispersion and mixing of ingredients to achieve desired performance, particularly in terms of corrosion protection as indicated by salt-spray performances.

Step 1:

• Add the following ingredients in order with good agitation in the mill-base tank, and set aside:
  • WATER: Used as a solvent
  • EDAPLAN 490: Dispersing Agent (Supplier: MÜNZING)
  • BYK 024: Defoamer (Supplier: BYK)
  • AMP90: Neutralizer (Supplier: ANGUS)
  • Dowanol DPnB: Co-Solvent (Supplier: Dow Chemicals)
  • SPECIAL IV Carbon Black: - Carbon Black (Supplier: ORION)
  • KRONOS 2190: TiO2 (Supplier: KRONOS)
  • DURCAL 5: CaCO3 (Supplier: OMYA)
  • BLANC ROC PLUS: Baryte (Supplier: MINERALS GIRONA)
• Disperse with high shear rate for 10-15 min and set aside.

SALT-SPRAY PERFORMANCES

• Sand blasted steel SA2,5; 200 hours; 1 layer; 70 µm dry

Step 2:

• Prepare the premix and set aside:
  • ASCONIUM-143: Anticorrosion additive (Supplier: ASCOTEC)
  • AMP90: Neutralizer (Supplier: ANGUS)

Step 3:

• Into the let-down tank, add the following in order, progressively, with continuous stirring:
  • NEOCRYL XK801: Binder (Supplier: DSM)
  • STEP-2 PREMIX
    • BYK 024 (BYK): Defoamer (Supplier: BYK)
    • WATER
    • Dowanol DPnB: Co-Solvent (Supplier: Dow Chemicals)
    • ASCOTRAN-H10: Antiflash-rust Additive (Supplier: ASCOTEC)
• STEP 1 MILL-BASE
  • Disperse with high shear rate for 5 min and add progressively:
    • TAFIGEL PUR64: Thickener (Supplier: MÜNZING)
