Desmodur® VL is an aromatic polyisocyanate based on diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), used primarily in the formulation of two-component polyurethane (PUR) coatings, fillers, sealing compounds, and synthetic resin mortars.
Key Characteristics:
- Type: Aromatic polyisocyanate
- Chemical Basis: Diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI)
- Form Supplied: Brown liquid with low viscosity
Specifications:
- NCO Content: 31.5 ± 0.5%
- Viscosity at 25°C: 90 ± 20 mPa·s
Other Data:
- Equivalent Weight: approx. 133
- Flash Point: approx. 229°C (DIN EN ISO 2719)
- Density at 25°C: approx. 1.23 g/ml (DIN EN ISO 2811-3)
Compatibility and Applications:
- Compatibility: Generally compatible with many hydroxyl-bearing polyesters and polyethers. A brief pre-reaction might be necessary, and compatibility tests should be carried out if there is doubt.
- Applications:
- Can be combined with Desmophen® grades like Desmophen® 5028 GT, 1380 BT, or castor oil-based polyols.
- Suitable for coatings that can vary from hard to flexible depending on the Desmophen® product used.
- Used in systems suitable for coating concrete, asphalt, fibrous cement, and plastics.
- Water scavengers such as molecular sieve paste® 3 Å are necessary to prevent reaction with water.
Storage and Handling:
- Storage Conditions:
- Store in original sealed containers.
- Recommended temperature: 10 - 30°C.
- Protect from moisture, heat, and foreign materials.
- Avoid storage at high temperatures to prevent viscosity increase and at low temperatures to prevent crystalline deposits.
- Shelf Life: Six months from the date of shipment, provided it is stored under the recommended conditions. Testing is recommended if used after this period.
