BYK-154 is a dispersing additive used for stabilizing pigments in aqueous emulsion paints and emulsion adhesives. It's composed of a solution of an ammonium salt of an acrylate copolymer dissolved in water. Key typical properties include a density of 1.16 g/ml at 20°C and a non-volatile matter content of 42% at 150°C.
This additive functions by stabilizing pigments and fillers through electrostatic repulsion, which enhances gloss, reduces viscosity, and improves storage stability. When combined with a wetting additive such as DISPERKBYK-187, colorant acceptance is further improved during tinting with universal colorants. BYK-154 does not stabilize foam and is VOC free (<1500 ppm).
Recommended applications for BYK-154 include architectural coatings, protective systems, industrial coatings, aqueous emulsion adhesives, and sealants.
Recommended levels of addition, based on pigment type, range from 2% to 10% for inorganic pigments, 1.5% to 2% for titanium dioxides, and 0.5% to 1% for fillers. These levels serve as a guideline, with optimal levels determined through laboratory tests.
For best performance, BYK-154 should be incorporated into the mill base before the addition of pigments.
Manufactured and distributed by BYK-Chemie GmbH, the contact information is provided for further inquiries. Additionally, in protective coating systems, it's recommended to use an additional dispersant based on an organic phosphate compound together with BYK-154 to improve storage stability.
