High build exterior masonry coating formula

This formulation is for a high build exterior masonry coating. It is designed to provide durable, weather-resistant protection for masonry surfaces. The formulation includes components to enhance adhesion, durability, viscosity control, and protection against microbial growth. This coating is based on Pliotec* LEB 18 low exudation binder and uses Natrosol™ 250 HR hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) and Aquaflow™ non-ionic synthetic associative thickeners (NSAT).

Components and Their Functions:

1. Water
   • Function: Vehicle, dissolving and carrying other components.
2. Low Exudation Binder (Pliotec LEB 18)*
   • Function: Binder, providing adhesion and forming a durable film upon drying.
3. HEC (Natrosol™ 250 HR)
   • Function: Rheology modifier, adjusting the viscosity and flow properties.
4. Alkaline (pHLEX™ 400)
   • Function: Neutralizing agent, ensuring the pH is in the desired range.
5. Sodium Polyacrylate (BYK 154)*
   • Function: Dispersing agent, aiding in the even distribution of pigments and fillers.
6. Polymers and Hydrophobic Solids (BYK 012)*
   • Function: Foam control agent, reducing foam formation during application.
7. Titanium Dioxide (Tiona 595)*
   • Function: Pigment, providing opacity and whiteness.
8. Filler and Pigment (Durcal 5)*
   • Function: Extender, improving the mechanical properties and reducing the cost.
9. Extender (Calibrite SL)*
   • Function: Extender, improving the mechanical properties and reducing the cost.
10. Talcum Extender (Luzenac 20 Mo)*
    • Function: Extender, improving the mechanical properties and reducing the cost.
11. NSAT (Aquaflow™ XLS-525E)
    • Function: Rheology modifier, adjusting the viscosity and flow properties.
12. NSAT (Aquaflow™ NHS-300E)
    • Function: Additional rheology modifier, further fine-tuning viscosity and flow properties.
13. Algaecide/Fungicide (Acticide MKB 5)*
    • Function: Dry film preservative, preventing microbial growth on the applied coating.

• Viscosity (ICI C&P): 400 mPa·s
• Gloss (85°): 1.0%
• Pigment Volume Concentration (PVC): 50%

Preparation Procedure:

1. Initial Mixing:
   • Add water to a mixing container.
   • Gradually add low exudation binder (Pliotec* LEB 18), stirring continuously to ensure proper mixing.
   • Incorporate HEC (Natrosol™ 250 HR), alkaline (pHLEX™ 400), sodium polyacrylate (BYK* 154), and polymers and hydrophobic solids (BYK* 012), stirring to achieve a uniform consistency.
   • Add titanium dioxide (Tiona* 595), filler and pigment (Durcal* 5), extender (Calibrite* SL), and talcum extender (Luzenac* 20 Mo). Disperse at high speed (20 ms-1) for 15 minutes until a homogeneous mixture is achieved.
2. Let Down:
   • Gradually add the second portion of low exudation binder (Pliotec* LEB 18), NSAT (Aquaflow™ XLS-525E and NHS-300E), and polymers and hydrophobic solids (BYK* 012), mixing thoroughly.
   • Add algaecide/fungicide (Acticide* MKB 5) and water, stirring until a uniform mixture is obtained.
